Painting with Music

So, I'm assuming you like music unless of course it's mumble rap then get away from me. But if your down with the sound let me introduce you to a cool music activity.

Side note: this might not be the best activity if you have a headache or are strongly against jingle bells outside of December.

First things first let's go to class.

I'm sure you have already guessed music is supper important for children's development, like just as important as STEM. Although, of course given a little less funding. Anyways... I've created a list of some of the benefits of music education.

1: Improves Language Development

Music and language are besties for life. The link between musical education and better language development in children has long been established. Lucy and Ethal aren't splitting up anytime soon.

The reason behind this is that musical training stimulates the same part of the brain that deals with understanding language. Children who have some understanding of musical education will, therefore, have a greater understanding of tone and how different segments of speech align.

This is kind of a "if a=b then b=c" situation.

2: Better Math Skills

We love math, we might not all be good at it, but we love it! So, there is another link between math and music, and it has to do with something called having control of spatial-temporal tasks. Umm, I sense that I lost you. Let me get you back. Okay, so this pretty much means that understanding music can help children visualize various elements that should go together, like they would do when solving a math problem. You get it? Kind of? Cool!!!

3: Inspires Creativity

This one is my favorite, because who doesn't want a supper creative and imaginative kid? It makes totally sense that exposing your kid to various styles of music will not only make them super rad but will make them more willing to seek out creativity. We want an interesting, and unique society, it helps steer us away from boring conversation like "man this weather am I right."

Alright, you feel smarter? Let's get into our activity!!

This activity is called, Painting with Music!!

You will need:

  • A paint brush, or sponge, or stick. Just something to paint with.

  • Paper and Paint

  • And the secret ingredient drum roll please.... jingle bells!!! (These can be purchased at a dollar tree, craft store or online.)

As this picture demonstrates so beautifully, you will take a paintbrush, attach your jingle bell via glue or tape and start painting. You can add onto this activity by having kids paint along to music. (It's doesn't have to be Christmas music; Bing Crosby will forgive you.) Have kids paint to fast music, then slow music. How does that change their painting?

Questions To Ask:

"What happens if you paint fast? Now how about slow."

"Do the jingle bells make a different noise when you move the paint brush in certain ways? Up, down, sideways?"

"Is it easier to paint this way?"

Get messy and enjoy!!!
